Wasps nest

I've found a huge wasps nest in my loft... Al the advice seems to be that it should be empty this time of year, and I was going to remove it, but after doing some other stuff up there I noticed a lone wasp crawling near the loft hatch, and thought better of it! Should I still try and remove it? Perhaps wait for a really cold day?

  • The nest will no longer be in use, the wasp you saw is presumably a queen waiting for spring to start a new nest. She will not use the old nest, so it does not matter what you do with it.

As above. It will be an old nest.

We get over wintering wasps in our loft and they build much smaller, golf ball sized, nests.

There were a couple of golf ball / ping pong ball sized nests either side as well!

The nests last for ages in the loft so could be several years old. I'd wager a lot of houses have them and they are never noticed, the same for the colony nests.

We had a wasp overwinter in our shed last year and it was fascinating as we noticed whilst it was building it's papery nest. It took quite a while to finish and we could see it stripping the wood from the door before secreting it. On the inside there was an intricate pattern of chambers for the grubs. Come spring they left.
