French Tarragon
in Plants
Nice to see French Tarragon already sprouting in pots outside. Caught me out as I’ve yet to remove last years growth.

After 2-3 yrs the flavour diminishes and root cuttings will rejuvenate the plant and flavour.
I just take 4-6" lengths of root with new sprouts on them and put them in gritty compost in a seed tray and top with grit.
Leave outside sheltered and they'll soon be away.

@MenaintheGarden it depends on the winter doesn't it? Never managed to get one thru a Belgian winter - very wet with temps down to -20C and no snow to insulate. It's OK here tho.

The preferred taste of French tarragon, I think, comes from an overlay of aniseed; I supplement the Rusian with fennel.

I can usually find new plants in spring in the garden centres and, very occasionally, in the supermarket vegetable section.
