You and I undoubtedly are @B3, as are most if not all of those who regularly discussed politics on here … but there are others … folk we do not know … who may be frequent or first time visitors to this forum … some of whom may have loved ones caught up in hellish situations … they may not expect to find such discussions on a gardening forum … indeed they may have come here for some quiet solace amongst gardening folk.
ETA After all, would we expect to find a letter about the horrors taking place in the world today printed in the paper version of the Gardeners World magazine?

It can be helpful here to put yourself in the shoes of the moderators. Will they be sued or investigated for hosting hate speech or otherwise violent or offensive writing? As I am always saying, most of the people who use this site are invisible readers who never make a comment and are not registered and never will be. This is not a private club or a chat in closed room, although the group culture has developed that way. IM may have had many formal complaints, you cannot know. IM is a private company established to make profit - It is not a "free" platform to host anything (although the group culture has gone that way too). It started as a purely gardening platform with a specific educational intent and that is its brief.
People always hate being modded, as if they should have the perfect right to post whatever they want whenever they want, but clearly, as adults, and taking into account the above, this doesn't work. Platforms have parameters. So, I'd suggest giving the mods a break and not acting like spoilt kids who have their toy taken away.
Somewhat surprised at your post, @Fire, you are always complaining about the lack of moderation. I suppose the general chat threads will be next. Good job most of us like gardening.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
If all non-gardening threads are banned it’ll be because some folk can’t behave like grown-ups and accept what Catherine Mansley has said, and that’ll spoil it for the rest of us …
Can we now just get on with stuff and stop poking the Mods to try to get a reaction? It’s not funny and it’s not clever.
Bog gardening anyone? … advice on submersible lawnmowers welcome … 🛶

I think that this will become a soulless place, that I will be far less likely to visit. If I can’t have a bit of banter, can I be bothered. Much more likely to spend more time on Instagram.

But the discussions about politics weren’t banter … it’s far too serious for that. There’s plenty of banter possible … just not on such very deeply emotive subjects where folk can feel very vulnerable.

If you feel strongly about the subject, and your principles are such that you feel you can no longer participate on the forum, then so be it.
@Fire and @Dovefromabove both make valid points. If the mods decide that decluttering, crafts, curmudgeonly feelings and reasons to be cheerful are also unsuitable subjects then that's up to them. Heaven knows there are enough places on the Internet to engage in that sort of thing if necessary.

I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful

They're not gardening related. I demand they're shut down too.
