Books for a beginner

Hi, we have just moved into a house that has a vegetable garden and greenhouse. We are really keen on making the most of it but haven't really grown anything before other than a few bits on pots that weren't really successful.  Can anyone recommend any good books that will guide a beginner to what to plant and when as we aren't really sure when and where to start planting. Thank you.

  • Welcome to the Forum. May I suggest your local library where you'll find a variety including, if you're lucky, Alan Titmarsh's How to be a Gardener.

  • Thank you, yes that's a good idea. I'll definitely have a look on the library.

Hi @watersannabel, you could also look for Geoff Hamilton's First Time Garden.

The Readers Digest book "Food from your garden" is also extremely useful.  Includes recipes and preserving techniques too.

I’m also a beginner and have gathered quite a few books to try and help me get up to speed but the ones I’ve found most useful are Monty Don’s The Gardening Book and the new edition of the RHS gardening through the year. I did get another RHS one called ‘how to garden when you’re new to gardening’ and although it covers a wide range of topics, it didn’t go into enough depth on each one for me - I like detail.

    Good luck!

I agree with @RM98, I started gardening ‘properly’ about 4 years ago and found the RHS book invaluable.  It’s a month by month guide of what you should be doing in the garden, I’ve added my own notes to each month to remind me what I need to do in regard to my garden.  Definitely recommend it for a beginner 👍

The Dr Hessayon series of ' Expert' guides are great for beginners.

Either get his book or watch "Mr Smith's vegetable garden" here on YouTube. I'd prefer his book, but it was a long time ago....
