I have a pure cotton king size duvet cover bought in a sale for £5 from BHS before they went bust - how many years ago? It's still going strong but I usually only use it for the guest bedroom.

An Egyptian high thread count fitted sheet from M&S didn't last long before OH put his toe through it, it also shrank a lot. Wouldn't buy another and actually now prefer a cotton/poly mix for bedding.

I usually buy pure cotton sheets and duvet covers,  although I have some sheets from Ikea with Lyocell in. Usually have two sets of duvet covers on the go, but I don’t keep them for more than five years, as I get fed up with the design / colour. Alternated once a week, and washed. When I replace them, they are usually in very good nick, so they go to the charity shop. The sheets get changed weekly, and I have at least three. I’ve never noticed them wearing thin, but maybe get a bit rough looking. I’d be quite pleased if they lasted ten years though.

I think sheets one thing to be careful about sourcing, if possible. I've bought too many 'high thread count', Egyptian  la la la to have it pill within weeks.

I've recently changed from cotton to 100% linen bedding, bought from both M&S and Etsy.  Very comfy, but will it last longer?  Don't know.

I’ve certainly got cotton duvet sets that I’ve had for years, and still going strong. Although I like to change the look in our bedroom every now and then, the old sets often get redeployed to the spare room. It does seem to be a bit lucky how they last. I had one set from the expensive Dorma range that I took back to Dunelm, complained and got my money back after three months as they started to come undone on a couple of seams. Poor stitching. Never had trouble with the buttons, but have occasionally ironed over the plastic poppers and melted them. ( I’ve found the easiest way to avoid that is not to iron them!)
  • I don't iron them @pansyface as they have that just slightly crumpled look which I find OK.  Plus I use a bedspread over the lot during the day!

I'm surprised that some of You find that cotton bedding pills. I have never found this to happen with 100%cotton no matter how old.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • I agree @B3  … back in the day I found poly cotton pilled, I think tumble drying in a high heat made it worse.

I made the mistake of buying sheets on Ebay once - 100% cotton - and they pilled within two washes. Pilling just comes from breaking threads.
