Photinia fraseri “Pink Marble”

Has anyone experienced reversion of the variegation in this Photinia? Could I prune out the plain leaved sprigs now? I’d like to cut out some of the lower foliage of this specimen anyway to make a small tree and provide space for understorey planting.  Thought winter would be a good time to prune but some websites advise waiting until May.

You need to prune out all the stems with green foliage, right back to their base because they can take over the whole plant if left.

I have raised the crown on my own photinia over winter on days when no frost is forecast.   You need to do it by the end of January before the sap starts flowing strongly again or wait till May when it will have slowed a bit - stops it bleeding sap and being weakened.

  • Thanks for the advice, next fine day I’ll be out there with the pruning saw. It’s a fairly mature specimen, I think about 20 years old.  Has been “lollipopped” over the years :/ , so very dense, I’d like to open it up a little.
  • Remember not to remove more than a third of the branches each year otherwise it’ll trigger lots of rampant growth … counterproductive if you’re wanting to open it up. 😊
