Keep bareroot fruit trees alive until planting?

I took delivery of some bare root fruit trees on Christmas Eve, and the weather has been so bad that I've not had a chance to put them outside - even in a temporary trench.

The very bad weather is set to continue until next Tuesday.  The trees are currently sitting in my unheated basement in a pot covered in compost.

What else can I do to keep them alive until the weather improves?

Is there any light in the basement  ?
  • Yes, there are windows, but it’s not too bright. Certainly not bright enough to grow seeds. We do have a larger greenhouse in the garden
  • I would put them in a large pot of moist but not soggy compost in the greenhouse. You don’t want milder condition tge basement to trigger them into growth just yet.
Hope the weather picks up for you soon  🤞

  • I pot mine until I can get them in the ground. I live in the USA in zone 9 & that works for me. I did that last yr for some bare root Mulberry trees & they're doing wonderfully. The trees were about 2 - 3 ft tall when they arrived & they're 5' tall now & I potted them in 5 gal pots. Now my problem is where the heck I'm going to plant them. You'd think it would be easy for me to find a place to plant them on 10 acres, but I think one spot is good, then I go out to the patio & change my mind! lol
