planting near Leylandii
hello and happy christmas to all
i am new here and an amateur just starting a new garden in the back of flats where i have just moved to
in the early spring i want to start growing some plants and flowers in the back garden of where i have just moved
there is a bank of leylandii which i am told were planted by the house behind the block of flats in 1975. they are as tall as the 3 storey buildings now!, but they are on the other side of the fence. i intend to be here for a while, so want to plant flowering border outside my window - azaleas, rhododendrons, peonies etc
how far away/forward form the fence line where those triffids are growing should i start to dig my beds? there is a 40 foot wide area which right now is purely grassed since the flats were built in the late 70s
thank you in advance for your sage advice

If you scroll down to the post 'Help with just weeded shady bare soil under leylandii- will these plants work, how many do I need'. There are lots of helpful posts that might apply to your situation. If the canopy is dense and soil very dry it may not be possible to plant successfully into the ground. Welcome and Happy Christmas.
Hope that helps. 😊
