Where have the birds gone!

  • Is there a reason  you buy your bird food in Morrisons @InTheMoorlands? There are lots of very good suppliers online which will make it far less pricey.

We get it with the delivery of groceries.  if you could point me to a site that's cheaper I'd be grateful.

I normally use this one, but there are many others depending on what you want to get  :)

    Thanks for the link.

Morrisons bird seed (main buy) comes out at £1.30 kg.  Delivery is free as it comes with our weekly shop.  To get it cheaper than that from the link I would have to buy in bulk and also pay shipping.

I usually top the feeder up with birdseed as it's going dark so the birds will have something to eat at dawn.  It usually empties fairly quickly as there will be a line of birds on our summer house waiting their turn.  Most of the seed is still there at midday.

    Very odd.

Over the last two days hardly any food has gone.

I wouldn't worry if things go quiet for a couple of days.

A few more mysteries. Sunflower hearts and peanuts are both as popular as ever, but why oh why are the dried worms left. I would have thought the robins would have loved them.

Dried worms need to be on the floor or bird table for ground feeders
  • I've not noticed any change here on the south coast.. I buy my food from Garden Wildlife Direct as I buy in bulk and get free delivery.  The Robin and Blackbird mix is a great favourite and there's no waste.  I soak the dried mealworms, otherwise they don't get eaten.  They also have suet pellets, even though there are some in the mix already, plus good quality fatballs and peanuts.  I am serenaded every morning by the Robin and today, we had the Long Tailed Tits in today in large numbers - smashing!

@InTheMoorlands - the problem with the cheap seed mixes is that they're bulked out with wheat, which isn't palatable to many birds, especially the great, blue and coal tits, robins, sparrows and dunnocks, which are our most plentiful visitors here. That's why I don't buy them - it's false economy, and the wheat germinates too easily as well. Wood pigeons [and various others like corvids] love wheat, and we have enough of them round without trying to get more into the garden!
As @The Bird Lady says, if you buy in bulk there's no delivery, and I also get one of the no mess mixes which will attract all the type of birds we regularly get around here. I'm usually buying sunflower hearts in decent amounts, as that's what gets eaten most, so I get a bag of seed with that now and again. I don't buy peanuts as it only attracts squirrels, and I certainly don't want to encourage those either.  :)

The only things my birds seem to care for are sunflower seeds (hulled and whole black ones which the coal tits like to stash) and peanuts. Though I haven't tried fat balls since I'm vegan.
You might be vegan, but the birds most certainly aren't

Surely it is our duty to convert the birds to veganism.

Birds have enough sense to ignore such nonsense
