Anthurium care

Hi all,

We were recently given an Anthurium, we've had it several weeks now and noticed the leaves have started to brown. From what I've read this can indicate multiple things. This is its current location:
-bathroom window
-north facing
-temperature in winter 12C
-Potentially draughty
-humidity low except at shower time..

I would say this is not the ideal place for it but can't really think of anywhere better as it has some humidity & light but not direct. Does anyone else have one and in what environment do you find it does well? They seem to be quite fussy despite being very common in garden centres. I like it but I don't really think our house is well suited, at least in terms of temperature and humidity.

Also, it came in a Waterwick pot, apparently with these you add water into the bottom of the outer pot with no holes and the plant takes up via the wick sitting in the water. Anyone think these things work for plants like these?

Thanks for the help.

The windowsill at this time of year at night will be very chilly - if you put your hand there you'll feel the cool air falling from the window.
That's chilling the roots all night and probably in the day too at this time of year.
If you can move it off the windowsill at night during the colder months that would be a good start.
At this time of year then sun is so weak that even a sunny position would suit it.
The sun may look very bright to our eyes but it's weak from a plant point of view.

That said they're not really suited as general houseplants, so panyface's suggestion would likely be best for it :)

    This may help

  • Thanks for the input, I think I will move it to a different location and see how it goes. But it's not going to be much warmer. Who's house in the UK is 18-26C in winter! Only if the heatings on 24/7. Funny that they are so easy to find in UK garden centres. If it continues to deteriorate I may have to find it a new owner, I might go too if it's warm 😁

I posted on the above link which may be of help to you as well. Someone else with the same problem.
  • Thank Fran I just had a look at that. It's possible it needs repotting, certainly has some aerial roots but I heard you can just cut those off. The brown leaves have only appeared since we've had the plant in the last month so that makes me think it's environment or watering frequency (once every 2 weeks) unless it's just decided it's too big for its pot, not impossible. Will check the roots. Thanks

I think you have a watering and temperature problem. I had one for years that grew very big.
They like a bright warm spot not in direct sunlight especially in the summer. I would re-pot it into a normal pot and when you water it let it drain before putting it back into the cache pot.

    Hi all,

I think this plant is also root bound now I've had it out of its pot? I imagine this is inevitable for house plants? It does look as if it's a bit big for the pot? (12cm diameter at top, 10cm height), plant is about 41cm tall including root ball. Some of the aerial roots also have a white fungus on, now I know plants roots and fungi have a relationship so perhaps this is normal.

Oh the joys of house plants.

  • From this it seems that anthuriums like to be root bound but seems to me there is a subtle difference between what is ok and what is not. I'm aware that if I change too many variables I won't know where I am. So perhaps I just move it for now and leave it a few weeks
