Question regarding grapevine layering

I have an old grapevine (25 years) that when I was pruning back this December, I noticed a branch has that was trailing across the floor. This has started to layer itself by putting roots out into the ground. When would be the right time to cut the branch off from the mother plant and pot up etc. Is there anything else I should be doing to ensure it survives?

  • Provided there are enough roots on the cut section to support the top growth, you can really do this anytime. It is perhaps best practice to do it in spring, just before new growth commenses but you could pot it up now if the roots are likely to get really cold/or are exposed.
With my grape cuttings (hardwood taken in late autumn) they develop really nice root systems in about a year, so your will have a headstart on those.

Thanks for the response, would I be right in thinking that I should put it under cover/greenhouse if I pot it up?
  • It would depend on the variety and how cold the winters are where you are, i leave my cuttings outside because they are very hardy cultivars. A greenhouse certainly wouldn't hurt it and the extra warm would speed up new root production earlier next year.

    Thank you.
