Fig Roots

Hi all,

Does anyone have a fig tree planted in the ground, near walls/house?
I was planning on moving my potted one into a bed below our living room window, but then I read about their roots and everything says very invasive etc - is this true?
It's a brown turkey fig. Surely it won't cause my house/foundations to crumble?!

Any advice appreciated.

If in the ground it is advised that you make and sink  a box about 18 in square out of paving slabs, or use a large pot with the bottom out. That is to restrict the roots so that it fruits better.  Unless you have a very old house with little or no foundations, it will be fine.
  • excellent advice, thank you I'll do exactly that!

You can buy root control bags that are supposed to control the fig's rate of growth and stop the roots escaping into the big, wide world. I have one of my figs planted in one but it is a recent experiment so I cannot comment on whether or not it works but the bag is certainly eaiser to pick up than a paving slab.
