Tree Identification

Hello,

Would anyone be kind enough to help me with the identification of this tree?

Many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

  • Hello @Kurisu and welcome to the forum 😊

I think it would help us to help you if we knew which part of the world the photo comes from 😊

    Hi @Dovefromabove

    Thanks very much for
your response. I am from the UK but I live in Japan. You have commented before on my posts about my garden in Japan 😉. You’re always so helpful and supportive.

I never actually identified a few of the trees I have. I think it was suggested that perhaps I should post separately about each tree if I wanted an identification.

Originally I think I had my email as my forum name. I didn’t think that was a good idea, so I changed it to Kurisu… That’s the phonetic Japanese pronunciation of Chris.

    Cheers,

  • Hello Chris … if course I remember you and your garden 😊

Im much better at UK native trees than non-native … but hopefully someone will recognise your tree 🤞

    Thanks a lot @LittleGreyRabbit

I just tried using AI 🤫. It suggested Japanese Ternstroemia (Mokkoku). I am not really sure though because the leaves are not that glossy.

What a very beautiful old specimen you have.

    Q1:
Near the base at the left hand side near the stone ornament. Is that a suckering piece that comes out of the ground?
    Or off the trunk.

    Q2:
Also the leaves appear to have a little serrated edge, little points to the edges.

Can you say how large the leaves are please. Or maybe a photo with ruler measure alongside one to show.
And a close up of the reverse side too.

    Q3:
Do you remember seeing any kind of flower or fruit on it at all and can you check to see if there are any remains of anything?

My browser is playing up so I cannot see to zoom in at the moment. But can almost see little (possibly) three prong stubs showing out of some of the big leaf clumps. Like a terminal fruit or flower has been there.

Or is it where it might have been cut or pruned?
  • It looks a little like a magnolia grandiflora...

The leaves on mine are bronze underneath, and quite leathery, unlike the pictures.

Thanks very much everyone for your comments.
I will try and get the pictures @Rubytoo asked for a bit later. It was a little dark this morning when I left.

I did take a quick snap of the object at the bottom left. It is a low branch, I think. There is also a Japanese box holly at what looks like the base of the tree (but is actually a little forward of it).

    Thanks again.

Here are the leaves. Sorry, it’s a bit hard to check for flowers today as dark in morning and dark at night when I get home 🙄. Also, it’s pouring with rain.

I don’t recall ever noticing the flowers or fruit but will see what I can come up with.

    Cheers again.
