@Silver surfer I remember a friends joy at finding G Three Ships some years ago. It had been on his Snowdrop list for a long time. Interesting to know it is an early flowerer I guess that is why he wanted it  and beautiful too.
Definitely one of my top 10.

Named after the Christmas carol...I saw 3 ships.

"I saw three ships come sailing in
    On Christmas day, on Christmas day;
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas day in the morning.

And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas day, on Christmas day?
And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas day in the morning?"
    etc

    G. Three Ships would be top of my list. Christmas flowering. It was discovered 40 years ago. Not cheap though.

Not sure if my friends was a purchase or a swap but I remember hearing it mentioned on several occasions. Not suprised it is linked to the song.
G S Arnott or G Sam Arnott is also well worth growing for bulking up but not that early.

Looking at my records I see that I put some G. S Arnott  (" tall, strongly scented variety") and G. Sentinel in last year, in the green.

They are (probably) in a small planter by my front step, which is lovely, in that I can sit by front door and look closely (not so easy in other beds). I noticed this morning that they are just emerging in this planter. It always feels like somewhat of a miracle that the plants come back/haven't been eaten/are happy enough/haven't been tossed on to the compost heap by me by mistake etc.

If buying special snowdrops in future I will certainly plant them in pond pots so they don't get planted over or otherwise deleted by mistake. So easy to do.

I will get a lot of cheapo singles in April, with my garden group. And I will keep mine watered this time.

If anyone goes to Dixter and sees Galanthus 'Lode Star' please take a pic if possible and post here for me?
A lady I worked for was a Galanthophlie, she sent snowdrops around the country as swaps and gave me some of these snowdrops.

Years later I spoke to Fergus Garrett at a talk and gave him some of the bulbs in her memory, she loved Great Dixter. He showed a slide during the talk a small wall in the foreground, where they would be planted.
This snowdrop was a new one for the garden and Fergus Garrett was very pleased to accept them with the Anglesey Abbey connection.

My dear friend was well know in garden circles throughout the country, everyone at the take would have known her and there was great applause when they knew that snowdrops were going to Great Dixter in her memory.

Strangely my mini iris have been out for over a week,  they are way ahead of any of my snowdrops.

Try living in Yorkshire, neither are out, although Aconites are flowering.
