Imbolc on Feb 1st is the festival of the start of spring. The traditional flower to mark it is snowdrops, brought into the house to celebrate new life.
I’ve just received my Broadleigh Gardens catalogue … OH bought me some snowdrops from there several years ago … it’s a catalogue full of the most gorgeous and slightly unusual bulbs etc for spring planting … worth a look at their online list if you don’t have a catalogue … Im currently drooling over Gal. ‘Fly Fishing’ … what a gorgeous and elegant snowdrop 😍 https://www.broadleigh-bulbs-spring.co.uk/shop/index.php?ns=prodshow&ref=galflyfishing
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
@Silver surfer, I am keen to add an early flowerer to my collection, preferably a good spreader, and fairly cheap. Any ideas, and where and when best to purchase?
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
@punkdoc The late Autumn flowering G Reginae-Olgae will spread if happy it does need more sun than some of the others. The early spring flowering G Atkinsii is one of the very best snowdrops and it will spread. I love this snowdrop and would recommend it to eveyone.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
@punkdoc …?The Broadleigh catalogue gives ‘Athenae’ as the first to flower there, in mid November. “…compact and very upright, steadily increasing in the shade of our horse chestnut … 8” Nov-Dec” but it’s £20.
The one I mentioned earlier “Fly Fishing” is described as “a distinct and early flowering snowdrop” flowering Dec-Jan £6 each
“Seren” is an elwesii cultivar “a vigorous grower … large well-rounded flowers on compact plants. Quick to increase. Dec-Jan £12 each.”
The catalogue states that as Christine Skelmersdale is retiring and moving (and selling Barr House) they will be moving the collection to their new home and they will offer any surplus online in February. If anyone is interested in wholesale quantities they should get in touch.

Beth Chatto is selling G Atkinsii £10.00 for three bulbs. I was lucky that I was given a large clump when a lady I worked for passed away. The White of the flowers is just showing on some now which I am pleased with. They have been moved three times in the last year due to house move. I must have left hundreds of pounds worth behind, as long as they give joy to the new home owner I am happy.
Often with snowdrops it is who you know, a collection can be increased by swapping and sending them around the country. The third episode of Gardener's World winter specials showed The Galanthophile Gardener at Thenford propagating them, Something a friend used to do with great success including G Trym.
I worked for a Doctor in the early 2000's she invited Snowdrop Immortal Ray Cobb to dinner and he gave her some bulbs of G Reginae -Olgae. I can recall splitting them and there were a hundred plus bulbs but this was many years later. The ones planted in deep shade didn't do as well some didn't flower.
Just to add Galanthus Ray Cobb is a beauty but not a spreader.

My favourite early is Galanthus Three Ships.....starts here mid Dec and has still had flowers at end of Feb. Else where ..down south in warmer area, saw flowers on it in November Big plump flower. Not quick to bulk up. Never cheap but worth a go.
@Silver surfer I remember a friends joy at finding G Three Ships some years ago. It had been on his Snowdrop list for a long time. Interesting to know it is an early flowerer I guess that is why he wanted it and beautiful too.
