I was doing some strimming and didn’t realise I’d cut hogweed,  being me, and in the summer, I had a skirt on,  it was hot,  my legs came up in blisters hurt like hell.

Oh no! Poor you! How soon after did you blister?
  • The sap of many plants, when ‘sprayed’ onto bare skin such as when strimming, can increase photosensitivity and cause blistering in strong sunlight.

Please folks, as well as protecting your eyes when mowing or strimming, always wear sturdy clothing  that covers your skin. Most equipment comes with safety advice … it’s there for a reason 😊

  • I have even known fresh grass sap to cause a rash on a child’s skin when in strong sunlight.

thanks for the photos @Silver surfer. I don't think I have ever seen the giant one here. Plenty of other invasive stuff though. I was wandering why so many of the truly invasive plants have hollow stems like bamboos, knotweeds, hogweeds ...

Maybe it's quicker/more economical for a plant to grow hollow stems rather than solid ones.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Interesting info here about plants with hollow stems
