Depth of soil *below* bulbs

When planting Allium Globemaster and Tulips, we're told how deep to plant from the surface. But how much soil should be below the bulbs for roots?
Thank!

Does the question arise because you're planting in planters rather than the ground?

If so, I like to use a pot or planter deep enough to allow 4 to 5cms below the bulb to let the roots spread a bit and it's important to use a good quality planting medium with plenty of fertiliser to feed the bulb as well as the new season's foliage and flowers.

If in the ground, I make a hole 3 times the depth of the bulb and then loosen the soil at the bottom so the new roots can get down easily to anchor the bulb and seek food and water.

  • Perfect, thank you. Yes, I was concerned that I don't have pots that are deep enough.  :)
