    An interesting point though for sure re the pan deep down - I hadn't thought of that and it's a possibility I'm sure.   I was away from mid July to mid August - was it especially wet at that time in the Midlands (where I'm situated)?

    Here in sunny Doncaster, not a million miles from the midlands, July was very wet this year. We had 104.5 mm of rain in July according to my (basic) rain gauge. The long-term averages are around 50 mm, give or take a few. August was a bit drier than average, 39.5, long-term averages also around 50 mm.
