New build where to start

I've recently moved into a new build. Tricky corner garden. North east facing with a slope and sun blocked by double story buildings on the boundaries (see pics). Upper left corner gets most sun and the utility area by the garden gate. It's currently waterlogged. I want to fit in a second patio in the sun, flower beds (raised due to builder rubble), running room for small boys and a few veg beds. Any suggestions for how to lay it out?

I would get rid of the narrow areas of grass and have those areas for plants, particularly the bit beside the steps because it'll be a pain to mow. The veg area needs to be sunny, and at least partial sun for the widest choice of flowers, although there are plenty of plants that will grow in shady places. I think I'd want a path to the steps because the grass will end up worn out and/or muddy.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Thanks Jenny, that sounds similar to my train of thought. Patio at the top of the stairs, connect it to the house with a path. Good suggestion with the narrow lawns. Will save me strimming. And beside the steps is quite sunny. Veg beds along the side of the house that gets sun.

There is a glitch on this site, you have to edit to reduce your photos a bit before posting.

Is it your fence? I would be tempted to plant some clematis on them, maybe a rose or two.

It's a pity the steps are in the sunny side. Would it be possible to move them?
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • I have a rose all ready to plant out. Clematis is a great idea 💡
  • I think moving the steps would be a big job to do.
  • I'd be quite tempted to use some small troughs and hang them on the fence and grow some herbs. Some mints suspended would look and smell wonderful.

  • My daughter suggested troughs on the fence. It would break up the expanse.

@Newbiegardner If you take a look at the problem solving section. Go to' Portuguese Laurel yellow leaves'.What is the drainage like? This is the first thing I would check can the soil conditions support plants?
