Compost Bin In Wrong Place?

  • Thank you for commenting.  I’m seriously thinking of moving it plus the fact it’s extremely dry due to the enormous canopy of the oak tree.  I shall discuss with my daughter as the plot is a joint effort.  🤗 it’s getting a bit nippy!

Mine are under this oak tree canopy, measured at 24 metres tall by the Forestry commission man.  They sit on soil. They are all enclosed plastic bins and I have no problems at all.  (hidden behind the bean sticks)

Any dryness is due to the mix of material. If it is too dry at first turning I water it.  Compost bins do not need to be in sunshine or get rain, it is all down to the mix in the bins.  Open bins will dry out. Use old carpet or compost sacks to keep them covered.

    Agreed
  • @fidgetbones Yes I can understand if they are enclosed the moisture you put in would stay in. Mine are open with lots of gaps.  The good idea of plastic bins I think is that you can move anywhere you like. We recently got a new pallet from the grocer it’s a euro one and it weighed a ton well 25 kilos to be exact! Plastic would be easier to move around. I shall have to have a rethink.  Thanks for the ideas! 😉
  • PS. They’re not cheap I’ve just looked!

Sometimes councils do them cheap to encourage people.  I have acquired several sorts from people who got them free or for little and then decided not to bother, usually because all they have is grass clippings and it makes a slimy mess. My grass gets mixed with a lot of shredded shrub or hedge stuff.  If you start with ebay and put in compost bins, then order it by cheapest, there are half a dozen blackwall dalek types from a couple of quid each, but you have to collect so nearest to you would be a start.  Also check facebook marketplace or freecycle.  Sometimes try a 'wanted " ad on facebook selling page gives results.   For lots of leaves I use builders bags I scrounge when anyone has sand or stuff delivered in it.
  • @fidgetbones  Funny how one becomes a different kind of hunter!  Searching for something useful for the allotment.  I’ve gone through many different hobbies but this is good all round for mind and body and well being.  Although sometimes I can’t get to sleep as my thoughts are in overdrive.😵‍💫

I shall contact my local council to find out. 🤗 Thank you
