How high is a plant?

More fool me - I bought a cypress tree reduced from £60 to £20 from an online plant store. It was supposed to be 100-120cm high. It barely touches 70 cm but when I complained I was told that the height includes the pot. Is this standard practice now? I thought height was measured from ground level ie after planting.

  • Hello @sarah.shalgosky05425  and welcome to the forum 😊

I imagine that, particular with online stores, the overall size is most relevant because of the size of the parcel.

    I wouldn’t worry … it’ll grow 30cm in no time 😊

I don't think the size of the pot should have anything to do with it.
I agree with you that the size should be from ground level up - it's not something I KNOW to be true, but I would think it is.
It may be worth looking at their Ts&Cs to see if it's mentioned there somewhere.

It is a sizeable discount you have though.

It will quickly put on much more than 30cm, more like 10 metres. As long as it is healthy I wouldn't worry about it. Smaller trees will establish better than larger ones but I don't think the size difference in this case will have any impact.

I would be sure that really want the tree at all and have enough space for it. Check it's growing habits and care.
  • The better places tell you if the height is measured with or without the pot, which I guess is the only way you'd know for sure.
  • Having recently moved to a new property the front garden was already planted. There is a row of Viburnum Tinus planted tightly together[ coming out next year as stupidly close] One still had a label it gave the name and then said 30 to 40 cm. This was the approx height of the plants at the time of planting! I think some of the new home owners will be deceived.
