Kuri Squash

I am thinking of growing some Uchiki Kuri for the first time next year. I have a large obelisk that I normally use for sweet peas. Would that be ok to train the squash up and how many plants should I place around the base? Any advice would be appreciated.

  • They grow fine up supports, it's how I grow mine, but how many would depend on how big the obelisk is really.
  • Thank you. It's six feet high and one of the metal ones you get at garden centres so not especially wide at the base. Would you have one plant at each foot or is that too much?

I'd just grow one up that.  Feed it well and water in dry spells.  Stop it when it has set a max of 5 fruits - less if you're in a cooler area or it's a cooler summer.

I grow all my squash up supports now - lets more sun get to the fruits and reduces their spread at soil level so you can have several plants.

  • Thank you.
  • I agree, they arent as big as some squash but can get decent sized plants in a good summer.
