It maybe that new leaves are pushing through. Do yours look like the picture?

@aprice19btinternetcom That is exactly what you want. The old leaves can be removed in January.

If your plant is from the Rodney Davey Group with the marbled leaves only remove the leaves as they become untidy. These Hellebores are also grown for their leaves.

I had to dig up a clump of H. niger last week. In quite deep shade, but the flowers were just about to poke up from under the soil near to the surface.
For ours it is a tiny bit early, but they sometimes do this, due to triggering weather and light conditions.

But it is normal for them (H. niger) to have the flowers buds very near the ground then as they open the stems get longer.

Do you know which ones you have.
There are many hybrids these day.
  • Niger and Hellebores from the Rodney Davey Group such as Glenda's Gloss, Penny's Pink and Anna's Red all require more sun than Orientalis.

That might be the theory, but I have several Anna’s Red, all in deep shade, all performing vey well. Plants can’t read.
How can you lie there and think of England
