Birch tree leaves

Any idea why there leaves on the top of my young Birch are way bigger than the ones lower down?

It could be that you have provided the tree with a better position and growing conditions than when it was bought in a pot. Its roots will be getting established now and taking up more water and nutrients.
Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

Maybe it had more water at the time when it was forming the buds for the newer leaves?
