I wonder if we might start a new one.

Does anyone know what this might be? Spotting in the community garden today. A bit bigger than my hand. I should have put something in for scale. No strong scent.

I wondered if it might be a new fruiting body of a fungus I found there in Sept. Is it likely or possible? An id would be fab. Thanks

wow. Do you think it's that? "An uncommon find in Britain and Ireland".

I guess it is too hard to make a definitive ID. I thought it was a bit odd to find a bracket fungus attached to nothing visible, but there was a tree on the spot years ago. The pores certainly look right. I thought the Sept image was from a degraded fruit but maybe that was the first stage?

If we already have a thread called 'Fungi' (used today & yesterday) why exactly do we need a new one called 'Fungi Thread'. Just asking

I didn't know. It's hard to track down a thread with a general name like 'fungi' but I will bookmark it

I got in touch with www.wildfooduk.com as @steephill suggested, and they shot back a reply saying yes, it is a Ganoderma. We are figuring out which one. All very exciting. There was probably a plane tree on the spot until about ten years ago.

Another very similar option, also uncommon, is Ganoderma pfeifferi - Beeswax Bracket

I'm sending some more pics to Atilla. I will try to get a shot of the stem, if there is one. It seems it is not poisonous. It's in a public garden plot.

They have been so terrifically helpful. Always a bit of a shock these days x

I've had the confirmation that the fungi is Ganoderma lucidum,

Lacquered bracket

This says it is "not a common sight in Britain and Ireland." "Relatively rare"

iNaturalist is a good place to log it @Fire

When you first posted the picture iNaturalist was the first website to show a result for me and that particular Lacquered bracket was from a recording in Russia.

Lucky you to have such a scarce specimen growing near by.
