Trimming overgrown ivy

Last winter I planted ivy in my window boxes which has now gone wild. Now I want to put in some fresh winter colour but keep some of the ivy. what is the best technique to reduce it without getting rid of it - do I just trim it? My lovely old gardener always told me to have "filler, thriller, and spiller" but the ivy is currently doing all 3! :)

    Yes, you can trim it.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • @Siobhancantgarden You can also tease it apart if you wish to thin it out but keep some length. Or of course a mix of both. I always wear gloves when handling Ivy.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
