Another tile grout question: some of my (inherited) terracotta clay tiles cracked. A friend replaced two of them for me. He mixed in powdered grout colouring for the fixative - This type of thing. We followed the instructions, but three days later the colour hasn't set and isn't fast - it comes off like ink on the hands. 🙄

Has anyone used this type of grout colourant before? Has anyone had any problems? I don't know whether to try and hack it out or cover it over and seal it. What a royal PITA.
  • Our bathroom isn't particularly well ventilated and after a while black mould starts to appear. I deal with it using a stiff toothbrush and neat bleach. I put just a little in the bottle cap and dip the brush in it to scrub the grout. I leave it a short while to work and then wipe down the tiles and grout. I only need to do this a couple of times a year, but if it works on your coloured grout you may only need to do it once :)

I use strong bleach as well.  Any cheap one will do.

I also use thick bleach and an old toothbrush on the white grout and sealant in our bathroom, just occasionally when they get to the stage that they don't come clean-looking with regular wiping down.
Our dark grey kitchen floor tiles have dark grey grout, and the kitchen wall tiles have a kind of off-white grout (white was too stark against the warm grey tiles), both are very good at not discolouring noticeably!

  • You do need to be careful with bleach if tiles are shiney, over time bleach can dull them

Mine seem OK so far (15 years or so since they were done). I only use the bleach occasionally, maybe once or twice a year or so.
