Mint pruning in pot

Got a mint I’m about to prune. As there are lots of young shoots coming off the basal parts of some stems (pic 2) should I still just cut to the soil level or leave some stems with the shoots. I suppose when it’s regrown any stems left behind may be hidden & I can still picks some fresh leaves. What would you do?

  • I have two types of mint, both grow slightly differently,  but I do cut them back to ground level for winter, as anything above ground will die with the frost.

I’ve a few potted mints. I cut away the older growth of the current year and leave any small new growth to take its chances. In the Spring you can treat any small shoots as cuttings, ie cut them off and root in a jar of water. I tip the big plant out, tease out some of the runners with roots and buds and pot them up for the new years plant.
  • I split my mint last Spring, and they are right they do grow like weeds 🙂

I agree in a pot they do benefit from splitting every year. I tend to be ruthless and only leave a 1/4 to 1/3rd of original in pot.
