Plant ID please

We have been sent this photo of a shrub (?) some friends saw in Dorset. They and we don't know what it is. The fruits look like large hips. Any ideas most welcome and thanks as always.

    It's just occurred to me that thinking back some years, I was given one of these by an Italian lady.
    She had 2 in her garden and they were very tall.
    She said they sometimes produce fruits.
    I kept mine for a few years, but it was a pretty manky-looking tree/shrub with leaves mostly toward the top and not much below so I removed it.
