Storing Alliiums

Can anyone help.  I planted alliums in pots this year and had hoped to move them into a new bed in the Autumn.  Can't get the new bed until next Spring and the squirrels keep digging into the pots.  Is it best to lift the bulbs out of the pots, dry them out and store inside until the Spring?  Or will the pots be OK if I put them in a cool room inside the house over winter?

I'd put something over the pots, netting maybe, to stop the harvesting by Squirrels

Need to be left outside in pots, you'll have to use some chicken wire or similar to cover the pots
  • Thank you so much - I guess it's off to the DIY store tomorrow for some chicken wire then.  Would be nice if the squirrels just concentrated on the mass of acorns dropping from the oak tree but I guess they are looking for a little variety in their diet!!

  • Watch out for the wrens too, caught this one dust bathing in mine! My fault, I put the pot right over the spot behind the compost bin where I've seen it bathing before.
