Weeds beyond the garden fence

Any tips please on dealing with 6ft high weeds directly behind my garden fence. The land is public but not accessible from that side (top of a very steep bank). I just feel they affect everything I plant on my side and not in a good way.

If your fence is the kind that has the panels slotted into concrete posts, you could lift one to get access. Don't forget though that even public land is owned by someone (council, maybe?) and you shouldn't cut anything down without permission. Although they may neither notice nor care if you do.

  • Hi @Gwen 2
We have a field behind us, that, while not public, is used by local schools. Weeds are above head height at the perimeter, and self-seeded sycamore trees are a nuisance, already at around 20ft high.

It has taken us three years to try and get someone to come out, but they did, a couple of weeks ago, and despite promises, nothing has happened.

If the land behind you is public, I suspect it belongs to the council. I suggest badgering them to come and deal with it.

We finally made the point to the school, that their lack of maintenance was causing ivy to grow up and over our garage. I didn't say I'd sue them for any damage. I let them come up with the apology that it might.

If you find that any of your property is affected, point out that it is THEIR responsibility to ensure your property is not damaged.

But you do need to find out who is responsible for the land, and its maintenance.
  • Thank you both, I doubt the council will be bothered as you say. Especially in the current financial situation.  🙄 good tip about raising the panels to have a go. Hadn't thought of that and now is probably the right time to do it.

  • You have my sympathy. My garden is surrounded by open fields and acres of land that belong to someone, neighbour next door but one, and Imerys clay company. The land has not been touched in the 20 years I have lived here so I have to contend with weed seeds blowing into my garden. I have started spraying over the banks where I can reach to keep the brambles down but grass seed etc. just travel on the wind. A nightmare.
  • What are the weeds?
