Rose tap root pruning

Can anybody advise me on how to prune the tap root of a rose please?  I am not sure which the tap root is & what it looks like. I am wanting to rejuvenate a pot grown in a container.

Last winter I repotted some roses for a friend. They all required root pruning.

The advice I received from @Marlorena was to cut back the thicker roots (quite hard if necessary), but to leave as many of the smaller fibrous roots as possible. The fine fibrous roots are the feeder roots while the thicker roots act more as anchors in the ground.

In January this year (when the plants were dormant) I pruned the roots in this way  and repotted in a mix of one third multi purpose compost and two thirds John Innes No 3. I pruned the stems back by two thirds (they were DA shrub roses). In March I gave the roses a feed with a proprietary rose food.

Fantastic growth and rose display this summer so the treatment obviously worked. Just as well because they weren't my plants to kill....😁

  • That's great.  Thanks for all that advice, I now know where to start.  I was thinking of doing it pretty soon but having read your reply I'll hang on until January.
