  I read that thread, and people that responded said it was likely due to stress,, nothing has changed for my tree since it was planted, the surroundings are exactly as they were. I did wonder if it might be a fungi of some sort.

  The surroundings may be the same but other things can change … last year's drought was exceptional and must have been stressful for a tree that, despite needing well-drained soil, still needs ‘abundant rainfall’.
