Olive Tree advice
in Plants
I have purchased 2 x Topped Mature olive trees. Currently they are in 48mm diameter tubs. I would like to permanently place them in 2 x Oak Half Whisky Barrels that are 70cm diameter. I appreciate this is a large jump in pot size. Can I do this safely without compromising the trees health? Also can I repot now before winter? Thanks in advance

I have a much younger one in a pot.
I moved it from a 3L pot into a 40cm pot and it's been there for 25+years.
Just make sure you use a good soil-based (i.e. John Innes) compost mix suitable for olives with plenty of grit.
I would wait until the spring now to do it.
The tree is shutting down for winter and it won't use the extra room until spring arrives.
If there's one thing they don't want is wet roots for long periods and all that compost would be pretty wet over the next few months.
