Books about gardens

  • Thank you @Fire - all you get on Amazon are the usual 'how to' books and the coffee table books about established gardens.

    for sure
  • It probably isn't quite what you were looking for @susiebower, but the other  book I was trying to remember is by the late garden designer John Brookes, 'Small Garden'. The version I remembered featured photos of many different ordinary gardens that depicted various elements of design, so just a snapshot of each garden. In case it is of any help:

There does seem to be a gap in the market for the kind of book you mention. Maybe GW could put something together. Have you contacted the magazine with your suggestion?

  • Thank you, @clematisdorset - that's kind of you. And yes, that's a good idea to suggest it to GW - I was thinking of telling them that it would be great if they'd always include a reader's garden anyway!

I would suggest Christopher Lloyd - yes Dixter is a famous 'public garden', but his approach is so personal (and applicable to small gardens) that I think he would hit the spot. 'The Well Tempered Garden' is a classic of his.

"Cuttings", is another classic C.Lloyd book, which goes through what he was doing, what he was thinking etc. each month. Probably still my favourite garden book. There are not many weeks I haven't dipped into it, for over 30 years.

Not really on topic, but this is lovely book of personal letters between Beth Chatto and Christo. They bicker about all sorts of things and their personalities come through strongly. They discuss the people they are mentoring. It's a great book to dip into

  • Thanks, @Loxley, @punkdoc and @Fire. :)

I agree @Fire, a lovely book. I managed to get a signed copy.

Another side note: on Ebay, World of Books basically give away second hand books for free, not even covering postage. It's a great way to dip into books you might not ordinarily explore..
