Dahlias not flowering

Bought dahlias in tuber form from garden centres many times, but not grown. This year I bought rooted tubers/plants…but still not flowered. Advice please

Welcome. Are they in the ground or in a pot? If pot, what size? How much sun are they getting? Pics will help
  • I planted them in pots of compost for a few months. Once they had a lot of green healthy foliage, I planted them in the garden (End of June)

Are they in a sunny spot?

  • Yes but other plants in the border around them
  • They were in pots until foliage established in June (s/w uk) then I put them in my borders

Did you feed them, and keep them well watered?

Did you get any buds at all? Were the surrounding plants much taller than the dahlias? Did you notice any damage to the leaves from pests? How many tubers did you plant?

Dahlia buds are round and firm:

  • You say you bought rooted tubers, did you actually empty the pot & see a tuber? I ask because a commercial grower could start from seed in early spring or cuttings a bit later and get a very sellable looking plant into the GCs by Whitsun I would think.

Whatever you do don't bin them without digging them up gently after first frost to see what you've got.
