I am with you on that one 444.
  • This question and answer just came up on BBC radio 4 Gardeners' Question Time today. The questioner had red coloured worms: effectively a worm bin...worth a listen, @nikki 7 !

  • They may come up if it rains as well, some anti-drowning instinct perhaps. When my wormery seems to be running a bit hot I add torn strips of newspapers, worms love a good mulch of shredded paper or cardboard.  I take a whole section of newspaper or (non-glossy) magazine, make cuts along the folded side with secateurs, and tear a thick layer of strips off at each cut. It's also preferable if the bin does not get too much full sun.

Once again, many thanks for all the replies folks.  I will certainly add an occasional layer of newspaper to the compost bin.  I hadn't thought of that!

Above all things brandling worms love glue - add an old paperback to your bin and watch them go crazy for it

Brilliant, my compost bin is writhing with worms, and I've got plenty of paperbacks I need to get rid of. I'll give them a treat later!

...create bookworms. I think you will notice that the worms like the spine best, where all the glue is. There are theories that the glue is full of protein which is hard come for them otherwise..

Lots of insects like book glue too

I've just added a couple of old paperbacks to my compost bin, too.  Hope they find the subject matter to their taste!
  • You should be ok if they don't have blackbirds on the cover or anything similar! 😊

That is a really useful link @fire. I did not realise the term 'bookworm' must have come from reality...
