Sewage leak onto garden

The mains sewage pipe recently burst in the flooding and dispersed raw sewage all over our garden, including our herb garden. Does anyone know how to treat the contaminated soil and at what point we can start to eat the herbs again? Thanks.

I wouldn't eat anything that has been covered in sewage, although if washed well and cooked it's probably safe enough. When the herbs make new growth (probably spring now, unless you get some very mild weather) that will be fine to eat as normal. Regarding the soil, I would think the winter rains will do the job of washing in and dispersing the sewage. If it's untreated it should break down the same as manure. Probably best to wear gloves for gardening for a while.

Claim on insurance or make the water company pay to rectify the damage.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
