Hedge trimming

Hi gardeners world

so i planted a hornbeam hedge in Feb this year and they were approx 1m tall and done nothing since other than watering and mulching

I'm wanting to check if there is any advice on when to trim the hedge for the first time

How to do it etc etc

Alot of advice out there for trimming an existing hedge but mine is still just a long row of closely planted small trees if that makes sense

Any advice welcome

I doubt they'd need any attention until next year. They're still establishing.
I don't think I trimmed my hornbeam for quite a while - probably at least a year. They were bare root whips planted at this sort of time of year.
It's very adaptable though, so you can trim the sides/top a little if it's a bit untidy, but it wouldn't really matter if they were left until next summer, depending on the sort of size and shape you're looking for, and how well they grow from spring onwards.
If  you have a photo that will help though.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
