Generally speaking ceanothus don't grow well in pots. I can't think of any dwarf varieties off the top of my head that might do. Can you give some more information, if you know which variety it is etc.
Other than when they're young and just being grown on, I can't see how any Ceanothus would be happy long term in a pot. A purpose built, large container [ie at least 60 cm all round] would be ok if correctly maintained, but not an average pot. I think there's a smaller variety, but that doesn't mean it's 'small'.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I haven't heard of that one, and Google can't find it. Are you sure it's not C. "Puget Blue" ? That one apparently has a mature size of 3m tall and 3m spread so it would need a very very big pot, unless you're only planning on keeping it for a couple of years. Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
I had 2 ceanothus in large pots but after a couple of years they started to grow a little scraggly. Last winter I put them both in the ground and they're looking much better now

They prefer a sunny sheltered spot to do well.

Some suppliers describe it as suitable for pots, but personally l think it would be far happier in the ground.
