GW says one in ten UK gardens have plastic grass!

That's one mad statistic. More are lost to drives made over front garden. Mind blown.

We have a bit. It's covering a small area of concrete over the septic tank in the lawn. The concrete looked awful and obviously we couldn't sow seed or plant on it.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Was there any evidence to support the claim?
My guess is a big NO

Arit Anderson just stated it on GW tonight. It's interesting that some of you just shrug and dismiss it without investigation.

Chelsea Flower Show has banned it. The Society of Garden Designers has banned it. The RHS Landscape Institute is against it.

"One in ten households in the UK have replaced their garden’s natural lawn with artificial grass, with devastating effects on both the environment and biodiversity. Not only do these products contribute to habitat loss; they also cause plastic pollution, destroy living soil, leak microplastics into waterways, cause flooding, contribute to urban heat islands due to the amount of heat they retain and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions in their production. "

Well we know the size of the global market is in billions of £s. We know how much is imported and sold in the UK. Some assumptions are bound to be made but the evidence is pretty good for widespread use now.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

whenever I'm on a train around London, admittedly not often. I'm sure I've never seen astroturf, or similar in any of the gardens, never mind one in three.
Sounds as believable as " 30 % of households have off road parking " which was once boldly stated as fact.
    Both are total TOSH.

There are c.87 households in our village and I am reasonably certain only one of them has plastic grass. I would be quite confident in guessing that pattern is repeated in all the villages round here.

And yet I suspect in densely settled urban areas there are streets where plastic grass frequency considerably exceeds 1 in 10. Can anyone confirm that from personal experience?

When Arit Anderson made that assertion this evening I raised an eyebrow and thought that is a statement in need of testing on Radio 4’s ‘More or Less’.
