Stella cherry free gift how to plant

My free gift is a scion, received yesterday packed in soil. How deep to plant and do I try and keep the soil around scion or remove?

    Are you talking about a cutting with no roots?  Scions are pieces of shoot that are used as grafting material on  to a rootstock.
    Or do you mean a young tree with bare roots that was packed in soil to protect it?

    I have removed the soil it was packed in and discovered roots! Its about 18 inches high so for now its in a large pot.
