Lawn Weed Identification Help

Hi,

We have this broad-leaf weed growing in our lawn. It came suddenly, took hold really quickly, and has spread across the lawn in large patches in no time at all.

Can anyone help identify it?

Many thanks

A picture of the plant growing would be better.☺
    Nottinghamshire.
    Failure is always an option.

  • As you can see, it's spreading quickly across the lawn, it's taken over in a matter of weeks:

Prunella vulgaris, it does have quite a pretty flower, you may not have noticed if you keep your lawn cut, as they poke up above the leaves. Did you notice little purple flowers?
That may help confirm whether I am right or wrong. :D

If you wish to remove completely it a lawn weed killer will do.
But also if you rake it with a spring tine you can drag a lot of it up and pull it out. You have probably noticed it tends to root as it goes.

Some people do not mind it, others wish for a relatively weed free lawn, it is totally up to you of course :)

I agree, self heal, an attractive wild flower.  Mowing closely will keep it under control. Of course, lawn weed killer.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

  • Thank you so much Rubytoo and bédé. We mow the lawn regularly so have not noticed any flowers.

We'll give your tips a go and see if we can get it under control. Really appreciate your time.
