Clematis Issues

Hi,

Is this clematis missing something or is it ok to look like this is October? It is clematis Pink Fantasy.

Most branches have dried and brown leaves but there are some branches with green growth:

The reason I was a bit concerned is because clematis Niobe is about 30cm away and is really healthy with no brown leaves at all. That border gets same treatment in terms of watering etc. This is Niobe:

Thanks for any advice offered.

It does look very sorry for itself.
Have you tried the scratch test on the shoots (carefully scratching the stem with a fingernail to see if it's green underneath) ?

Sometimes clematis can just sulk and refuse to do anything even though they are literally a stone's throw apart from a healthy one. I had one just the same.
If it were me l would be tempted to dig it out and inspect the area re drainage etc. and also take a look at the rootball to see if it is producing new roots. It's possible that there is a hard "pan" directly below it, but that is going by my own experience.

Having another greedy, large flowered clematis only a foot away isn't ideal. The healthier plant will always win - in this instance, the Niobe. It'll be taking most of the water and nutrients.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
