Mahonia Soft Caress
Hello,
I am not sure what's happening to mahonia in my friend's garden, but it's slowly dying despite sitting in a good soil, where as its sister plant is flourishing in my garden. Could it be that his garden is near a beach and sandy soil does not go well with mahonia? My garden is 100 miles from the beach.

I suggest your friend clears all the plants and grass around it to a diametre of 1 metre and then waters itw ell with rainwater and gives it a mulch of leaf mold to retain the moisture and nourish the soil.
If that's not possible, they should condiser moving it into a large enough pot with a 50/50 mix of ericaceous John Innes no 3 type compost and Multi purpose compost to simulate woodland planting conditions. The pot then needs to be placed in shade while the plant recovers. They should water it well first, leave it for an hour to soak then dig it up with as much of the rootball as possible and plant it at the same depth as before.
