Allium Bulb Condition

Alfie_Alfie_ Posts: 456
Hi,

Quick question but would someone please kindly tell me if some of the alliums I have received in the condition as per picture below will work/flower? Some are missing 1/3 to 1/2 of the bulbs. I don’t want to waste a load of time planting them if they won’t flower.

They are all Allium Gladiator

thanks

If the young flower bud, inside the bulb, near the base, has been damaged or removed it is unlikely that the bulb will flower.  Any damaged tissue will also become vulnerable to rot or disease when planted.  Have you contacted the supplier about this?  Any reputable supplier would provide replacement bulbs or a refund.  Those bulbs are quite expensive, you should not accept them unless you have received them as discounted items.

I would plant them - if they aren't still viable they will quite possibly produce new bulblets. These may not flower in the first year.

If they seem to have been divided either naturally or by man, with a smooth surface which is not damaged, then as @Perki says, they should be fine.  I’d still question the supplier though if the size difference concerns you.  I have grown them, they are stunning and do reliably repeat flower.
