Apple Tree

An odd question but a serious one nevertheless. Why are so many apples laying so far from the tree ? Obviously they're laying directly below it as well but there seems to be so many some distance away...and not downhill either.
And dogs can't be blamed.

Thanks

Could there be a clue in the word ‘windfalls’ I wonder 🤔

Which would account for those laying directly underneath the tree.
But windfall doesn't exactly describe those laying yards away, over a fence having rolled up hill

Squirrels and foxes will carry them away from the tree.
  • Many varieties of apple grow long thin legs and run about in the night... that's what those brown dots are the indicator of...
It's why some of them are called crab apples...
  • Certainly if it were very windy, and these apples were at the top of the tree at one point, it is possible that they were catapulted that far, allowing for a significant roll after the initial landing - even though you say it's not downhill.
However, it would seem more likely that they have been moved by some type of creature - whether that be four-legged or two-legged !!
Children do like to play a joke. Self included, as I've done something very similar to my wife - then, with a straight face, asked her if she can explain it.
