Rosa Alba Celestial

I have got two Alba Celestial coming from David Austin, could anyone advise me on planting distance , I know they say to plant in threes, half of the mature width apart but is it the same with albas? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have not grown albas before.

    Hi Christopher,

I grow a lot of roses but I don’t grow albas because they are unsuited to my warmer climate, but..

Planting in a triangle of three works for smaller shrub roses so they grow together to give the appearance of one larger, rounded shrub. Planting in twos may look a little off balance, especially with very large shrubs like albas?

As they only flower only once in early summer, personally I would plant them singly in different parts of the garden surrounded by summer/autumn perennials to extend the flowering season, but if you are set on planting the two together, these are the Austin distance guidelines I have followed for planting in threes. On this basis I would plant ‘Celestial’ at least 1m apart:

Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
  • Hi Nollie, Thanks for your reply, they will go in front of a 7ft wall so will go with a 5ft spacing I already have climbers covering one end . I always plant in threes or fives as well but wasn't sure about Celestial as apparently they arch over, if all goes to plan the Albas and climbers should cover the length of the wall .
    Kind Regards
    Chris
