Ceanothus help needed

I have two variegated Ceanothus (approx 2 years old) which barely survived last winter. I have managed to keep them alive but they have hardly gained any new branches and have never flowered. They resemble (one more so than the other) brussel sprout stalks! (a central stem with a few small branches sticking out)  What can I do to help them flourish going forward. tia.

I don't think there is anything you can do. The variegated types are less hardy, so they may be on their way out. I would see what they do next year, but if no improvement, I would remove them.

I agree. I have a variegated one, in a sheltered spot against a fence and on sandy well-drained soil, and it's always been a lot less robust than the green-leaved ones. Most springs there are leafless dead bits that need trimming out.

Thank you @JennyJ and @punkdoc for your replies. I may have to give up on them as you say, shame, because It was the variegated leaves that attracted me in the first place.  :(
