End of an Era

I get my usual gardening magazines, and have seen that this month is the last for Amateur Gardening after 139 years. So sad to hear this, they have helped me along the way with my gardening. They say that it is the rising cost of paper, printing and the free seeds (that they have to buy from seed companies). I know times are changing and technology as well. But I for one look forward each week to get my gardening fix with the magazines. And it is like reading a book, actually holding it in your hands, rather then looking at it on a computer or a kindle. They did not say that it would be online only. So sad, thank you Amateur Gardening Magazine and all of your hard working staff.

You must have quite a stack of magazines after 139 years. :o
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

@Jacqueline29 That is sad to hear, as you say the end of an era, gardening today is very different in so many ways. Do you know if Amateur Photographer is also going? My bro regularly contributed photos and photographic help.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

My daughter bought me a subscription for Amateur Gardening one Mothers' Day and I carried on buying it after the subscription expired. Over the past few weeks I could never find a copy in the shops and couldn't understand why. The last one I bought I managed to find in Tesco dated 2nd September. That was probably the last one issued.
I shall have to decide which one to buy in it's place.
  • @GardenerSuze I think it is all ending, I did also send in photographs that made the magazine previously as well.
  • The last issue is dated 14 Oct, I am currently in the middle of it on Readly. This issue has a "goodbye" page and a lot about the magazine's history.
(For anyone not familiar with Readly, it's an app that lets you read loads of mags for one monthly fee. There are plenty of gardening titles and you can read all the back issues too.)
  • unfortunatly with new gardeners growing up with computers they like this forum is all online so it stands to reason reader subscription for the hard copies of magazines is dropping off
Sad to hear the news however used to see the mag in dentist waiting room back in the day
  • I remember
My father getting a  magazine called the Small Holder and Amateur Gardener, not sure if it's the same one. I didn't realise it was still going.

I once attended a talk from one of the big magazine publishers who told us the only reason for including a title, irrespective of its subject matter, is to sell ads in them.  The more titles they have, the better multi-mag deals they can put together.  Sign of the times, I'm afraid.
